WATCH HERE: KATE GOSSELIN Plus 8 in "Pirates, Kites, and Turtles, Oh My!" New "Kate's Take."

Kate & kids on the beach.
Another episode of Kate Plus 8 debuts Monday night on TLC: "Pirates, Kites, and Turtles, Oh My!"
Previews of this episode show pirates and the beach as Kate Gosselin and the adorable 8 kids share part of their summer visit to Bald Head Island. We first got wind of this visit when Katy Hall published information at Huffington Post, with her version of "reporting" leaving a lot of questions in the minds of anybody who follows the Gosselin family. North Carolina tourist areas have been hard hit by downturns in the economy and many vacation rental homes have gone unrented this year. Hotels along the coast from Southport to the Outer Banks report lower occupancy rates than past years.

Is Bald Head Island only for the ultra rich or celebrities? While there are large homes, accommodations there are available in many price ranges. No motor vehicles are allowed; these are parked back on the mainland. Golf carts and bicycles are used for transportation. It's a place of quiet, not glitzy night life such as that found in Atlantic City, NJ, or even that of the not too distant Grand Strand in SC, that includes Myrtle Beach. People go there to tour Old Baldy, as the lighthouse is called, to enjoy the nature preserve, play golf, swim, etc. To get away from crowds and just enjoy nature is how North Carolinians describe Bald Head Island's charm.

Old Baldy

Bald Head Island, off the coast of North Carolina, is an island reached by a 20 minute ferry ride. Despite Ms.Halls's claims of exclusivity and her parent's home being across the street from the Gosselins' rental home, North Carolinians, of all incomes have been taking the ferry there for "day tripping" as well as overnight or week stays for decades! Anyone, yes that's you or me, can enjoy a visit there. There are overnight accommodations for one night or a week, and they stretch across quite a difference in price ranges. Private homes tend to be more secluded with trees retained before construction began, or planted later.

Last year's house
The photo at right, made during the Gosselin's visit last year gives you an idea about the trees and vegetation. This allows an increased feeling of being a bit more private. It's not so easy to see the houses next door. Beaches are not crowded; you can easily look around and see your whole group without having to herd them to avoid being lost in crowds.

Yes, celebrities visit there for the quiet, but they are not given special treatment by police, shop owners, or local residents. For decades it has been known for its "live and let live" attitude. Quite a different place than that described by Ms. Hall.

Boys at the Battleship 2009
This is the second year that Kate and her 8 children visited Bald Head Island. Last year, a side trip for the boys included a visit to the Battleship (USS North Carolina) in nearby Wilmington, N.C. What do they have planned for this year? (Approximately two years ago, Jon and Kate visited Carolla, located on the northern portion of NC's Outer Banks. Bald Head Island is located off the southern portion of the NC coast.)

  1. I'm betting on the kites, but I'm usually wrong, lol.

Thanks for the hilarious emails about Saturday's post. I just needed to lighten up and enjoy a very leisurely day. After this week, I needed it big time! :) If I cut anybody off, you can continue here.

I just am so excited about Monday's episode that I couldn't wait!

  2. You bet I will tune in, I will watch anything with Kate and the kids, even if Sarah Palin is in it and that says a lot because in my house Sarah on tv is a channel changable offense. Maybe seeing her in something away from politics might change my view of her, I am willing to keep an open mind. I am so happy that they found their vacation spot and I appreciate that they are soo willing to share it with us.

  3. Yes!--I will be watching. I'm so glad it's on Monday night instead of Sunday.

  4. FOR THE RECORD, as most of you know, my original plans before Hurricane Earl called for me to be at BHIsland this very weekend for an annual Girls Get Together.

Although the Gosselins address for this year's BHI visit has been published across the web, I have no intentions of repeating it here, nor would I repeat the Hall's address. I'd like to give them their privacy even though their daughter cared nothing about the same courtesy.

Katy Hall is the one who said her parents' home was "across the street from where the Gosselins stayed." It is indeed across the street, BUT let's just say it is oh a good 6-8 blocks away!! And that distance is pretty generous.

My original plans, before Hurricane Earl called for me to stand on the road in front of the Hall home (but not showing their house) and make photos to where the Gosselins stayed. This was to show there was no way she looked from her parents' home to where the Gosselins stayed. Not unless she's kin to superman and can see through multiple buildings and trees.

  5. I loved your other post Linda. My husband was laughing because every time I see that I show him. That and the husband remote.

I can't wait to watch Monday. I miss the beach soo much and will live vicariously through the Gosselins.

My 10 year also wanted me to mention on here that turtle turds is now her new favorite phrase. LOL

  6. Absolutely will watch it! Surprised we are getting back to back episodes for once! I hope TLC does enough advertising....many folks have been confused by this unusal program scheduling of these specials...thus the lower ratings I think. So we all need to support Kate and have our boob tubes on!

    ReplyDelete
  7. CM03 - Thanks a bunch for comments about the other post. I was trying for a little comedic relief as well as stalling to post this. I couldn't wait though, lol.

I'm winging it on the posts and photos, CMo3, so if you see something i need to fix, please let me know. I'm hesitant to make changes for fearing screwing something up.

  8. Great post Linda. At first glance I thought BM was back and posting again ha.

I know you made a disclaimer about that last post but it does seem like you know my husband very well. heehee

  10. TV guide lists another new episode next Monday (Sept 13).
To be honest, I don't watch. I am not being facetious when I say I think it is time for the filming to stop.
I wish the family all the best.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Denise. It doesn't tell us if it will be a new episode or repeat. JTwice they have done that and it has been repeats. So we wait and see. May I ask a question? (I know you're not being facetious.) Do you avoid watching at all this season, or just not the "first airing?" I'm just curious. If you don't want to answer, that's fine also.

    ReplyDelete
  12. My online TV guide lists the Sept 13th 8 p.m. show as "new" and the 8:30 as a rerun of "Pirates, gators and turtles, Oh My".

I had never really watched the show (I think I saw one of the specials) until my daughter in college asked me what I thought about it. I saw things that made me uncomfortable although the children are incredibly appealing. What gives us the right to see their private lives? I include all reality TV children in this opinion.

I don't mind shows that have a medical or educational value but the week to week exposure just seems voyeuristic.

No negatives meant to anyone here.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Denise - Thanks for sharing. I use the TLC guide which changes from week to week, lol. I know that TLC supplies the info to TV Guide. Many of us here will be happy if it is a new episode.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Your doing a great job Linda! Sorry to hear your trip was cancelled. Girls weekends are important. Hope you girls rescheduled.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks for the heads up on the show. I may actually get to watch this time. I'm happy it is back to Monday nights. Sundays just did not work for me.

    ReplyDelete
  16. momsby - Thank you for the kind words. After "Earl" passed by, the rest went ahead. Until the back heals, I can't do bumps or choppy water, so decided to err on the side of caution. We've done a couple of Skype connections today so I could say hey to the gang. It's one of my favorite places so may try in October, still warm enough then but ferry schedule is shortened. But there's always next Spring or next year. My kids are not as fond of it since it's so quiet, lol; exactly why I love it...not crowded and peaceful.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I will be gone by 9 AM and will not watch any kids or shows on TLC anyways. Their lives should be their own! Just saying!

Enjoy the rest of your Holiday!

    ReplyDelete
  18. #1Caregiver - Hope you have a great day.

    ReplyDelete
  19. My very strong feeling is that no one should spend time watching any program they don't want to watch!

I don't want to rain on anybody's parade, but I just have a feeling that we can expect more drama from the Jon camp coming soon. I would greatly appreciate being totally and completely wrong. Remember please that it is contract renewal time. Jon's contract is over and so things get "dicey."

I enjoy Kate Plus Eight. I enjoy watching Kate. I enjoy watching the kids. My kids enjoy Kate. My kids enjoy watching the kids. We make no apologies for that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Linda I feel the same way. My kids love the show. I understand others reasoning for nor watching, but I don't share their views.

    ReplyDelete
  21. On the record - I commend California for stepping up again to pass harsher, stronger laws against paparazzi invading a celebrity's right to their private space! Not only can they be fined, and or jailed for reckless driving in pursuit, but other measures also. More impressive is, I believe, steps to fine media outlets for buying/publishing the photos the papparazzi make!!!

I have not been able to check back today to see if the Governor signed the bill making it a law. I sincerely hope he does!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Every round of the CA paparazzi laws seem to get a bit tougher and stronger. I would urge the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) to file a class action suit against specific paparazzi and specific media outlets that purchase the photos. Stronger yet would be to have the state of CA file suit. IMO, there is no protection of source laws that relate to photographers. I say, haul their butts into court and/or supoena to have them name the specific photographers!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am ALL FOR stringent laws against the Paparazzi but this one sounds like it's useless:
The Legislature enacted a goofy law to amp up the penalties for paparazzi who break traffic laws in pursuit of pictures (AB 2479); it's easy to bash paparazzi, but this law is so vague it will surely be ruled unconstitutional, and violating traffic laws already is a violation of, well, traffic laws.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Denise - It is a START. At least somebody is doing something! I, for one, at least give them credit for starting. Tori Spelling and kids had a near miss a few months back.

I have no problem bashing paparazzi at all. I find them disgusting. I'm taking up a collection now to send Chris the pap on an assignment to the South Pole.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks for emails, folks. I'll figure it all out eventually. But, by the time I do, Baby Mama will return from vacation and I'll retire.

    ReplyDelete
  26. A Minor Consideration could assist SAG also with the lobby against pap stalking.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks all. We got a little side tracked on the paparazzi issue. My fault for mentioning it. I had just watched the video clip of Kate Moss under attack (with child in tow) by paps at LAX and I wanted to just cry.

So, since we won't solve this issue - how about we talk about tomorrow's show.

    ReplyDelete
  28. momsby - I will try to post the clips of the show on Tuesday. May not be as pretty or as neatly done as Baby Mama would do it, but barring any more blogger crashes, it will be here, should you miss it.

If you missed last weeks show on Gosselins in the Big Apple, it is posted now on the thread, 10 Reasons Why...
Comments are closed there but you can watch the show if you wish.

  29. Hi Linda!! It's working. Thank You!

ITA-- the paparazzi issues need to be addressed and soon.

  30. Corrina - You are so welcome. Sorry, again, for the inconvenience.

  31. Blogger/Google's latest advice for those getting 503, 502, errors that reroute you to About: 503, etc. after posting to try one of the following:
    1. Hit back arrow key and you should see your post appear.
    2. On PC's try F5 or CTRL+R to reload the page from the window in which it's 503.
Blogger is still working on the bandwidth issues.

  32. I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's show. I'm also curious about why TLC is waiting so long to announce each new show. Sometimes, it's a puzzle.
    -----
The kids look so cute in the pirate gear. Even though they are growing up almost as we watch, I still find all eight to be the most adorable kids.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I wonder if TLC is keeping things under wraps in case Jon tries to sabatoge things. If they haven't promised something the viewers won't be as disappointed and therefore he doesn't hold the power. I think also they aren't sure where Kate's projects stand. It does hurt TLC when they don't advetise adequately because people can't plan to watch even if they had wanted to. One thing that I notice is that people seem to think that the kids are filming all the time. Soo far when they have filmed the paparazzi has caught it and it has been specific incidents like dates on a calandar, they have the whole rest of the time where they have privacy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I can't believe how fast the kids are growing up and soon Mady and Cara will be 10.

That's a good point--why TLC waits so long to announce new shows. I hadn't thought of that giving Jon less time to sabotage things.

Awhile ago there was some discussion about whether the 6 are in kindergarten or first grade and now I am thinking kindergarten--is that correct? (maybe I missed the answer)

    Thanks--

    ReplyDelete
  35. Interesting point tashapork.
    -----
Corrina I am not sure if it's K or 1. IMO, they are in an excellent school that will advise best options for the kids, whatever those may be. :)
    -----
So far, the paparazzi have "outed" the chicken coop episode, New York, Alaska, and Bald Head Island, and previously the Dolphins (May) That hardly adds up to "filming all summer" dissing.

We'll have to wait and see. The filming permit expires in October so I'm told on tabloid sites. It is contract renewal time at TLC. My guess is that Jon will not be getting a cut IF there are contract renewals. I would anticipate hearing the on again / off again voicing of filming should/should not happen from Jon. We'll have to wait and see.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What I would remember if I were Jon. Yes, indeed, he can write a book about anything (or team write one or have it ghostwritten.)

If Kate's books were flamed by haters for being written about the kids, and thus "profiting" by virtue of them, Jon would do well to remember that. Should his book be about/mention the kids, he's opening himself to the same hate targeting. Hopefully, somebody will get Lafair an accurate timelime.

Also, Kate is pretty silent so far. If not under contract to TLC, she too could do a book again, and not just on cooking. My advice to her would be to have an authorized biography by a respected person in the field, such as Doris Kearns-Goodwin or someone of the same clout.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Just a few thoughts----Maybe they will wait until the 6 are 7 to start a new season of filming when school is out. Until then, Kate can do some reporting for DWTS and maybe write that next book or film some Twist of Kate episodes if that new show is still in the works.

As for Jon's book--I would read it and hope with all my heart that it is something we can praise him for.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The thing that aurprises me is that we haven't heard anything about twist of Kate, not one word. The Paparazzi hasn't come across her filming twist of Kate either of late.
My only concern about a book of Jon's is that it not be something traumatic for his children. I hope he takes Kate's example on that respect. I wish him well in whatever he decides to do.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Corrina & tashapork - I too wish Jon well in whatever he does. Lafair isn't impressing me much at this point from her blog. Does she think Hailey isn't of legal age or something.

Best remark - Kate's response at the Emmy's to Jon's book, "Ive moved on."

I have no idea about Twist of Kate, viable still or not. TLC may be holding it for after Kate Plus Eight ends its season.

Thinking of TLC, has anybody noticed the initials for Lafair's outfit? I wonder if turning from on Corp of that name to another with same initials is as ironic to others as it is to me? Do we have to now say, which TLC or tlc?

I'm just chilling today getting ready for grilling and then tonight's show, and hoping all kids are tired enough to sleep tonight, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oops... My apologies. Others have noticed the irony of the life coach (tlc) being the same as TLC (The Learning Channel.) So it clicked with others first.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I can't wait for tonight's episode. I wonder if they are going to bring Twist of Kate out later in the season, after they are out of footage from the summer for Kate plus Eight.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I hope TLC is still going to do Twist of Kate. As much as I like seeing what the kids are up to I was looking forward to seeing Kate do her own thing.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Actually there has been press on the Twist of Kate but it was months ago. Kate filmed those episodes awhile back and while they didn't make the rag magazines there were articles on what was being done on individual shows. Looks like it will be fun and Kate will be experiencing different slices of other people's lives. It isn't suppose to air until November. About the same time as Sarah Palin's show.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks yourawoman - Obviously I missed it. Thanks for sharing. The logical time to air it would be during November, when it's Sweeps rating times for tv.

    ReplyDelete
  45. What a fabulous holiday! Hope you've all enjoyed a stress free and fun-filled weekend with family and friends. Rounding up and herding kids to bed and hoping for no intervening drama.
    -----
Tomorrow I'll take down the preview clips and try adding tonight's show.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Good luck Linda O - I know you can do it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So to clarify, did Jon and Kate go to Bald Head island together last year and they decided to divorce during that trip?

I am referring to the comment that Kate made about looking up divorce lawyers on the beach last year; however, they also showed Jon climbing the lighthouse with the kids, one year ago.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Jon & Kate went to Carolla on the Outer Banks two years ago. Northern coast.

Kate went alone with kids to Bald Head island last year. Southern coast.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Turtle nests are protected. Durin hatching times, even houses turn off outside lights at night. This is so turtles return to the sea.

    ReplyDelete
  50. fascinated, if memory serves, Kate & the kids went to Bald Head to get away from the kitchen renovations taking place at the house. I don't recall Jon being on that vacation. Did he stay at the house to oversee the reno? It was over a year ago, my memory might be fuzzy.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks Linda and Lori-Anne. I was confused watching tonights episode. Maybe I misunderstood it, but it sounded like Jon took the kids up the lighthouse last year. Confused the heck out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. fascinated - it can be confusing. There are a lot of lighthouses in NC.

Carolla is near where the wild horses/ponies are, more towards Virginia, on the Outer Banks.

Bald Head Island is below Wilmington/ferry from Sothport, nearer South Carolina. In between the two is a lot of coast, beaches, lighthouses, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  53. It'svery quiet, pretty much you buy your groceries in Southport and take them on the ferry. It's a place for relaxing. If you want nightlife glitz, you go elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I've been told by a friend that the Gosselins did go on a horse drawn carriage ride in Wilmington (perhaps another episode ?) although a different one than I pictured above.

Turtles nest all along the southern coast here. Turtle watch puts fencing screens and signs up for protection so nests don't get squashed or disturbed. Even hotels on Wrightsville Beach Island (Wilmington) ask guests to keep drapes pulled so light doesn't show and confuse them during hatching time.

Sure I'm boring people now, lol, so I'll shut up and not talk about the pirate history, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree that the timing of the lighthouse visits could have been confusing, because on tonight's episode they showed a flashback clip of Jon taking the kids up the lighthouse, and it was captioned "one year ago". However, that visit was clearly two years ago, at a different lighthouse during the outer banks trip when J&K were still together. The only thing I can figure out is maybe tonight's flashback clip was from last year's Bald Head Island episode, which is the only way the "one year ago" caption would make any sense.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Shirley - That's how I took it. Flashback to last year, which included a flashback trip with Jon. I guess that would be called what? A double flashback??

    ReplyDelete
  57. Kate's next appearance? Just noticed she's scheduled Tuesday on Ellen Degeneres Show.

    ReplyDelete
  58. ahh, thanks Shirleynoname. That makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  59. If there is an interest, I'll try to post Kate's appearance on Ellen DeGeneres scheduled for today. It does not air here until late afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Linda, don't bother posting the Ellen show, it's the re-run from last year. The one where Ellen acts clue less to knowing her.

Most of the talk show are now re-runs. Just thought I'd let you know.

    ReplyDelete
  61. #1caregiver - Thanks. I thought it must be but after the email, I just wasn't sure.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hurrah!!! I have it on very good authority (Baby Mama's Twitter) that the chief, Baby Mama, will be back in force perhaps tonight or tomorrow.
    -------
I'm hoping this means I can retire, lol. We've missed you and we look forward to your return!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Linda--Thanks also for the reminder that Kate's Take is new--it was fun to read about her experience at the Emmys.

    ReplyDelete
  64. WOW, there's a new show in Sept. on your favorite or not so favorite TLC Channel. Sister Wives preview is posted on ROL. Read it and weep!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Corinna - you are very welcome.
    ---
#1caregiver - that's another show I will never watch, period! On TLC, I don't watch Toddlers & Tiaras and a number of others. On their parent channel Discovery, I don't watch anything to do with snakes or 'gators. I have a hard enough time watching the "Monster Fish" shows with a child who is very into that along with endangered species.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Funny, it looked to me as if Kate were participating in the kite activities…I thought she just sat around while the crew did all of the work, at least according to Hall.

Thanks for posting the episode, Linda!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Lori Anne, ShirleyNo Name, Ali, — Thank you for your comments and posts. (I don't think I missed anybody but if so, it was unintentional.)

    ReplyDelete
  68. CMo3 & others - thanks for your emails . Sorry you are still having problems logging on and posting. I know you probably can't read this now, but maybe later. :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. FYI - Niecey Nash was just announced as the ET correspondent for DWTS. Also, just got engaged. I hope Kate calls and congratulates her.

    ReplyDelete
  70. #1caregiver - What a wonderful opportunity for Niecy. We wish her well. I'll bet all of last years team congratulates her.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ok it's working now but it's loading still really slow even on 3G.

My favorite parts of last nights show was Kate climbing the light house and facing her fear and those baby turtles. My daughters were so sad when it was over. They wanted more.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thanks, CMo3 - at least you were able to get it to load and post.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It's super slow for me also, not timing out but lie molasses in winter, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Good morning all. I'm hoping for faster connections today and fewer emails from people who can't get on or post.
    ------
I'm curious about what Monday's episode will feature. As of a few minutes ago it was not listed on TLC. As soon as we know, we'll post it here.

Baby Mama was in the airport yesterday with flight delays but I'm sure she'll be back soon. I know she wanted to do the next post, so I'll hold off. If there were more delays, I'll put up the recipes post late morning. She can always just close it and put up something else.

    Have a great day all.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hi CMO3--I was wishing the show lasted longer too--like a 1 hour special.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Corrina & CMo3 - I know the original premise was 4 or 5 hour long specials. I'm thinking that perhaps they are taking the material and breaking it up into more 30 minute shows. Guess we'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  77. TLC is now calling the new episode for the coming Monday "A Rough Ride." the Monday after that is just labeled as "Episode 7."

    --------

I have not seen previews of "A Rough Ride." Has anybody seen one?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Radaronline had a post on Kate last night saying Kate 'trades' Mommy Duty for a mani/pedi. INFDaily had a snark about her short skirt she was wearing (I don't think its short at all) I am just so sick and tired of these sites writing garbage and lies to get good reads. Enough already!! They didn't say where the kids were (probably in school) and yet they write that crap. Ugh makes me so mad.

    ReplyDelete
  79. KatherindDenise - I'm delighted that Kate was able to turn away fast enough that Chris the Pap wasn't able to snap shots of her face. Apparently Jon and Kate were avoiding another gate pick up, so no kids in the van.

The skirt wasn't short at all, not even what I'd call a mini, just a regular denim skirt. INF is short for informed news and features. I vote we rename them MUIN for mostly uninformed. I agree, I'm so tired of the garbage against Kate as well as Jon. I detest INF completely! The comments against J&K are one thing, but how or why they allow the nasty comments against the kids is beyond imagination.

    ReplyDelete
  80. momsby - If you are reading, after the afternoon with the tweeners, I'm about ready to check and see if there is a group discount for boarding school (kidding of course) but knew you'd understand the drama.

  81. OK! WHAT DID I MISS? Hello everyone! Missed you all! Decided to put a a re-cap post. Mainly for me to go over what I missed. If you know of anything else I missed, please let me know!

This fresh paper is in memory of Disney World. The faint smell of Mickey Waffles are on the Horizon! lol Linda, thanks for always doing an amazing job on this site!
