DWTS Misses Kate, Did Ratings Drop After Her Departure? Jon's $10 Autograph

BuddyTV.com: Apparently, Kate Gosselin was a big reason why Dancing with the Stars pulled ahead in the ratings. Sources say the show even posed a threat to American Idol, and that's all because of the reality TV mom.  Supporters and haters of the Jon and Kate Plus 8 star just had to tune in to watch her week after week, just to find out if she's staying or going. It ended up being no surprise that when her fate was finally decided, ratings for Dancing with the Stars dropped significantly. Entertainment Weekly reports that the recent installment of the competition, post-Kate, marked the lowest ratings for this spring. Among adults 18-49, the numbers decreased 10 percent from last week. It also went down 20 percent from the show's prior average.

The loss of Kate Gosselin on Dancing with the Stars also meant missing out on the colleagues she bonded with on the show. The Jon and Kate Plus 8 mom apparently became friends with Evan Lysacek, who told E! Online about how much he misses her. Even the rest of the cast noticed Kate's obvious absence. "We all miss her for sure," Lysacek said. "All you have to do is spend five minutes with her to know what a sweet person she is and how nurturing she is." He's not the only one giving kind words to Kate Gosselin. Dancing's Louis van Amstel also apologized to the reality TV matriarch, after announcing that she "needs a psychologist." Us Magazine caught up with him after a recent performance to hear him out.

"I want to apologize to Kate. I really do. She grew on all of us so much," van Amstel declared. "What I was meaning to say is that dance is like therapy. It's such a great way to use movement without having to talk about it -- just move and go to a certain place. That's what I said and that was what Kate needed." Too bad it's the other way around. Dancing with the Stars needs Kate right now, if they want to keep those ratings up. But we doubt she'll return anyway; the show will just have to survive on its own, and it has, even without the reality TV mom. It was the question on everyone's mind after last night's Dancing With the Stars: Does anyone seriously miss Kate Gosselin on the dance floor?

Does Anyone Miss Kate Gosselin? E!News.com

We know what you're thinking, but what the still-standing dancers had to say about the latest eliminee might surprise you. Unless, of course, front-runner Evan Lysacek was just feeling the effects of a nasty noggin injury..."I'm OK, a little disoriented, but we definitely miss [Kate]," he told us. "She was such a nurturing person." In fact, he's kept in close contact with reality-TV's megamama. "Anna and I were actually lucky enough to see her this weekend. She came to my show in Hershey, Penn. It was great to see her, and we all miss her this week." Niecy Nash seconded that emotion: "The thing about Kate that people don't realize is that she really wanted to be here. I'm not quite sure why that didn't translate on camera."

People really do miss Kate over on Dancing With the Stars. Do you?

Would You Pay $10 For An Autograph? Beforeitsnews.com

But how much is a photo opp? Dude is getting desperate. Jon Gosselin is now charging $10 for his autograph. OK, OK, so the money isn't for him-- it's for a college sports team-- but still. Will anyone really part with $10 for a Jon Gosselin autograph? We'd hand the $10 over to the team and say "no thanks" to the autograph. But if you're one of the few who would die for a Jon Gosselin autograph, you need to head to The Green Turtle Sports Bar in Frederick, MD, this Thursday. Jon will be there signing autographs for $10 a pop. Whose brilliant idea was this? Well, the money will go to support the women's soccer team at Mount St. Mary's University, which Jon's brother Thomas coaches. Nice that Jon is helping out his brother, but sad that his life has come to making public appearances at a charity event for a soccer team. And sad that the team needs money this badly that they think having a Jon Gosselin appearance is a good idea. Of course, the university doesn't seem to be a fan of Jon and they want everyone to know they're not actually sponsoring the event.

According to the school's director of communications, "We are a Catholic university and we don't sanction infidelity... Well, at least his heart is in the right place in wanting to help his brother... Thomas is a great coach. We have a terrific soccer team." Ha! We love that she just basically assumed reports of Jon cheating on Kate Gosselin are true. But can you believe Thomas actually wants brother Jon at this event? Maybe he loves his soccer team so much, he'll just do anything for them. How much money do you think Jon will make for the team? Maybe he's just hoping to land himself a rich soccer mom.

  2. I also forgot to add, if anyone is near MD and going to this autograph signing, please let me know so I can give everyone a re-cap.

  3. I knew the ratings would drop a bit. Cause I didn't watch and I said I would, I just wanna see who wins!! Go Kate!!

  4. Umm.. I think I'd rather pay $20 to have Kate's autograph.

  5. ... and donate the $10 directly to the soccer team.

  6. I feel bad because it's for his brother. I mean it would be horrible if he was doing it to pay off his monthly child support..lol So in this case, I hope people go and support him.

  7. I'd pay someone $10 to take his autograph out of my hands...

lol, not really, but couldn't miss the joke oppurtunity... :)

  8. I love this blog, Baby Mama. I can keep up with ALL the latest Gosselin news without spending all day searching online. Thanks for your hard work. I feel kind of dirty after I read some of those tabloid sites - like I need a hot shower.

I am especially enjoying seeing Kate come out of her "shell". She had so many self-imposed limits that were holding her back. It is great to see her blossom and I can't wait to see where she ends up. Kind of a cinderella story. She and the kids will both benefit in the long run. I also can't wait to see the kids on their show again. I miss the kids. And Kate. But not Jon.

I agree that I would rather donate the $10 to the team and skip the autograph. But, on the other hand, if Kate becomes (more) famous her ex's signature might be worth big bucks some day.

  9. Hey, at least Jon is doing something worthwhile, right? I don't think it's "sad what his life has come to." Had he been upright this whole time, he would be receiving accolades for this charity event.

I never did watch any of the DWTS episodes, just watched a few of the segments that I could find with Kate's performances. I just love how all the good press is coming out about her! The poor haters are having to make-up stuff about her to make their point -- oh wait, that's what they've been doing all along! Of course, I hope she wasn't just being nice to them because those people are celebrities and not necessarily "annoying" fans. I mean, I wonder if she would've been so protective of the kids if the celebs from the show were fawning over them.

SG - Hey, thanks for even taking the time! Basically, I was doing a ladies' bible study and we were at this section. Moses asked of the Lord "Show me your glory"; here after all that Moses has witnessed God do, he still didn't have enough of God. He still wanted more. So, God did not deny his request and set Moses in the safety of the cleft of the rock as He passed by. Every servant of God should have such hunger. So, my desire became that the Lord would show me more of His glory - hence, the name of my blog. I couldn't figure out a way to put my name in instead of my blog name, so I had to settle with keeping my blog name as my "poster" name, which I'm okay with :)

I knew your screen name was biblically based, but I kept hearing parts of old hymns in my head. "Rock of Ages, cleft for me..." There was another one with the phrase "Set in the cleft" but I can't remember it.

  12. I don't miss Kate on DWTS cuz I didn't watch it routinely anyway. I watched the first couple episodes, but she was just so awful. I really hoped that she was going to get really good and WOW us all. but who am I? I would be stumbling all over myself and nervous as heck, so I'm not denigrating her. I just don't care for the show. No reality shows for me ever, except J&K+8 is the only one I like. Oh, sometimes little people, but Matt Roloff is a big ol' rear end most of the time. I can't stand people like that.

  13. Baby Mama -way to go! And to do a screen shot from your iPhone, hold down the home button on the lower front and at the same time press and release the power button on the top edge. You'll hear a click and the picure is sent to your camera file. First time may be a mess, lol, but you get better with practice! :)

if that doesn't make sense, the iPhone website has photos to show you how to make those screen shot photos.

  15. Okay, I am sorry but the $10 autograph signing in bar just sounds really weird to me. The college (a Catholic one) has disavowed this effort - saying they don't condone infidelity. (And before anyone jumps on me about the time line that the marriage was over - to Catholic Church, Jon engaged infidelity if he had sex with anyone other than Kate until the marriage was legally disolved. Actually, strict Catholic teaching would consider it infidelity until the marriage was annulled.)

    http://beforeitsnews.com/news/37408/Would_You_Pay_10_for_Jon_Gosselins_Autograph.html

It really strikes me as something Jon cooked up while sleeping on his brothers sofa to get his name back in the public eye in a way TLC couldn't complain about. After all, it's for charity so ...

My question is: what happened to Jon's Childrens Foundation? If he is so gung ho about raising money for charity, why isn't he raising money for his own charity?

  19. It looks as if Kate's blog is moderated, more than likely by a staffer. So glad to see that. I was tired of seeing all the hate being spewed all over her own site and she doesn't need to put up with it, neither. She already has to put up with all that's out there so it's good to see she & TLC has some control of it in their own corner.

  20. I bet Kate has to order socks from a wholesaler, the way one child can lose socks, I bet that is a big issue. Maybe she could find a way to tie a string to the vanity or table and attach it to the brushes.

  21. The DWTS ratings barely dropped at all, the first hour dropped 700k, and the second hour dropped 400k. It don't know where they are getting 20 percent, because that would be over 4 million viewers.

  24. Re: Kate's Take; Yes, it might be moderated but they are still letting the haters through. I just cannot get over how the people who seriously do not like her will actually take time out of their day to comment on her blog or any blog about her. This is mind-boggling!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Maybe it's only moderated for offensive language and vileness. But I agree, it is mind-boggling how hateful people can be. Sometimes I think they're demon possessed with all their vile hatred and jealousy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. KD, that picture of Kate with her abs should stop the nasty speculation about her being pregnant.

Mobius, I have seen the ratings numbers slanted boths ways. It is really hard to tell what the ratings mean. My quess is the results show is as telling as anything. Tuesday April 27 without Kate - DTWS stars had 12.15 million viewers while on Tuesday April 20 with Kate - DTWS had 13.45 million viewers. So that is a difference of 1.3 million viewers.

In the final analysis, television producers will determine what kind of draw Kate is as they will be the ones hiring her potentially.

  28. I am addressing this to all of the haters out there since they seem to spend as much time on this blog as we do.
If you hate Kate Gosselin, and you have the right to your personal feelings, please do your part by
    1. If she is on TV, changing the channel
    2. If she is speaking or book signing, don't go
    3. If she is on a newspaper or magazine, don't read it
    4. If she is on the internet, scroll past or dont go to that site.
If you want her off the air and out of media, lack of ratings will cause lack of revenue and that will speak louder than your vile words.

If you are getting pleasure out of the act of hating, please direct it toward soemthing worthy of your attention. Life is too precious for all the anger and it isn't bringing about the objectives you want, it just makes you look bad and gives some of us more reason to take a more steadfast stance in support of her.

And annastasia, if you care SOOO much about the kids why do you agree with JW who is just bashing Kate and had nothing to say about the kids. Better get your story straight dear cause ughh its as crooked as it can get.

"Go ahead, take me on. This will just make me stronger."

I completely agree. I don't understand the hate facination with Kate.

I have to laugh because I read the posts after many have already been posted and people refer to posts that are no longer there (eg. 39. OMG this is literally so sad. Jon Gosselin moving out of his brothers house with no help, and using garbage bags!

"It’s moving day for Jon Gosselin. The father of eight moved himself into an apartment in Reading, PA and RadarOnline.com has the pictures. The reality show dad packed his clothes and belongings in garbage bags. And from the pictures, it appears he did the move all alone. As RadarOnline.com first reported his new apartment has several bedrooms and it’s a lot closer to his children and ex-wife Kate.

Jon had been living with his brother since breaking up with girlfriend Morgan Christie. In the meantime, Kate is having Dancing With The Stars withdrawal—but has rock hard abs as a reward for all her hard work."

  40. I agree that that was sad for him to move alone. I wonder if he has furniture and such in storage. I also wonder if people declined to help him because they didn't want to deal with paparazzi or he wanted to do it alone so paparazzi would see it that way. I am soo glad that he is getting his own place it will be soo good for him.

  41. You know, Kate really is a good writer. Her blog is well-written. I'm hoping to pick up her book this weekend!

  43. You never welcomed me BM, jk:). I think we as a team should go to other sites such as ROL, TMZ, US and support Kate with positive reviews. Those haters find Kate's news loet faster than us, lol. We should be like those apostles, spreading the good news to other sites about Kate, lol.

It is sad to see Jon this way, hopefully he turns everything around and help with the kids as well as Kate.

  44. SchmeckyGirl - all you missed was annoying cyber haters trying to harrass. It's a full moon. If that gives you any idea. Something like 17 posts.

I believe in First Amendment rights. That doesn't give people the right to bully or harass. It's sad that hate has consumed some people's lives that they are completely consumed. I've learned more about this subject than I ever wanted to know.

They are citing you again SG. While I don't agree with your perspective on a day-to-day basis, I do know that you try to cite your sources. It saddens me to that they mis-quote you and twist things completely different from what IMO you were trying to say.

  51. I was at the supermarket tonight and mistakenly looked at (now)last week's edition of Life & Style or InTouch(?), the one with Kate on the cover. It had the usual nonsense about how the DWTS co-stars don't like her. Funny the picture they showed inside had everyone except Evan and I think one other person.

As for the TLC blog, I posted a comment on her very first blog last year while the show was still going on. My comment was extremely positive and it never got posted. Since then I haven't posted again--I definitely think they are moderating the blog but I don't know how. I also think that TLC may be deciding when to publish certain posts. For example if Kate knows she'll be busy or does not want to forget a particular story, it's possible she may be writing more than one post at once rather than weekly. This would explain why some posts don't seem very timely. I do agree that Kate is a very good writer. I actually think she should be a mommy blogger and start her own website rather than write a blog for TLC. One of my business school friends does this and is extremely successful. I could see Kate doing very well with this, similar to what Brooke Burke does.

I don't think it's a big deal about Jon moving his stuff in garbage bags. He probably didn't bring much to his brothers house, except clothes and the bags are full of dirty cloths. Next pics will be a moving van with his furniture from NY. If he saved it, which he did, I hope!!! One bedroom set with Knife holes for memories! LOL!

I have to wonder what kind of people actually spend time or money to read all those trash mags that keep spreading false (and denigrating) rumors about Kate and other celebrities. Most of their readers must not be very intelligent or are so naive as to totally buy into all their crap. No wonder the hate surrounding Kate has become an out of control epidemic.

    Waves to lucysmom & Michelle!
Michelle, I agree with your idea about trying to get posititiv Gosselin post's on the net. It's actually a little pet project of mine. Maybe we could start by showing support to the article in NewsWeek, just a thought. I'd like to see more articles addressing the insane hate movement. If we can get some intellegent & witty discussion over there going, maybe we'll see more. Just a thought...if you have the time & agreed with the author.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Lucysmom~ you are such a great addition to this blog, I guess I never got to tell you that! I think of you as one of my regulars now, and that's an even bigger and more powerful title in the Land of Oz!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks, BabyMama!

And I agree that Kate doesn't have to be in the news every day. She needs space to live her life in privacy, too, for goodness sakes. Oversaturation can backfire on any public figure, especially if she's going to have her shows launched this year. The key is to have a balance between some decent coverage and interest at the right times and some "quiet" times in between... so long as there are no additional dramas added by others.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I changed my screen name to Linda "Original" - lol, maybe that will help. Added a rose photo from my garden.

  60. Momsby, [Wave back!] (and congrats, too, on being quoted on the Newsweek article.)

I've also posted positive comments on other sites, too, (under different names) a few times but it takes so much time even to read through a lot of those articles anyway, let alone post. I've seen a lot of positive comments and views from others, too but it seems that we're just throwing out pearls before swine and it just doesn't seem to help reduce the hate.

It's so discouraging when you just can't debate intelligently with the insane and irrational people out there. Those type of people are going to believe only what they want to believe and rationale and logic aren't part of their thinking.

However, having said that, if anyone has the time and fortitude to keep trying, I'd say go for it and don't give up. Keep up the good work.

I'd also like to see more decent articles addressing and even challenging the K-hate phenomenon and more coverage on her admirers who aren't afraid to speak on her behalf.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I just get so tired of the hate. It is a wearying (is that a word) task. That whole hate discussion group on Amazon just blew me away. At least Amazon is taking some responsibility towards implementing future controls. If you don't like her, post a negative. But don't feel compelled to attack each and every person who posts a positive.

Thank you Baby Mama for having a site where people can express differing views but weeding out those that are "Just" Venom filled.

  77. Thats funny that you mention the luggage thing because I had been thinking of Kate's nice suitcase and also all of the the suitcases she uses to go on a trip with the kids when I saw Jon's trashbags. I was also thinking about how before they started charging for bags, most of our out of town company would come with one suitcase and always get extra stuff while they were here. It got where we would look for extra suitcases at yardsales and thrift stores for them to take back because I wasn't into going to the post office and paying through the nose. The apartment building looks really nice and I hope he is happy there.

  84. Schmecky - if you are home today can you research the book info. I won't be home till noon - I have it on home computer.

    IMO it's called distorted journalism.
    Briefly:

Book scan only includes sales from independent, Mom & Pop type niche bookstore and also does not include sales at Christian bookstores for example. I would not expect independents to even carry Kate's book. Books such as those by Baldacci, Patterson, etc do not go high on the bookscan lists.

NYTimes surveys 3,000 chain bookstores, and independents, and wholesalers. Their method is a closely guarded secret. No online sales are included.

USAToday surveys 3,000 bookstores and there is one list with fiction and nonfiction and children's books all lumped together. No online sales are included.

Amazon only includes their online sales.

Weird things happening to text here. Operator malfunction on tiny keyboard, lol. But you get the jist of it. Each list is tracking using a different method. They serve a different info for different reasons.

It costs more than $5,000 to belong to Bookscan and get their real info. Even then, you are getting only independent sales, no chains, and no online sales.

More info at Wikipedia and from there can go to the original sources.

    Apr 29, 2010 11:33 p.m.

Former "Jon and Kate Plus 8" star Jon Gosselin made an appearance Thursday evening at a Frederick, Md. pub called The Greene Turtle.

Gosselin's brother is the coach for the Mount Saint Mary's University women's soccer team and he showed up at the pub for a fundraiser.

"People pay a $10 cover and take as many pictures as they want with me and all of the money goes to my family's memorial fund, which will donate much of it to the soccer team," Gosselin told FOX 5's Will Thomas.

A university spokesperson told reporters that Mount Saint Mary's University has no official connection to the charity featuring Gosselin.

  87. Baby Mama - I do have the info on JW's latest post.

She needs to read the tos for blogger and google. As the registered moderator (owner) of this blog, you may remove whomever you wish for any reason. She may come and read, that is a first amendment right. If you ask her repeatedly to not post, and she continues, this is cyber harassment and cyber stalking. Additionally civil suits can be filed for defamatory comments (knowingly making false statements.)

She goes site to site attacking anyone who does not share her hatred of Kate.

She posts from blogs that are anti Kate, such ad the blog article at the Tampa paper (posted here) and attacks articles that are pro Kate or neutral (such as the Newsweek one.

I'm doubt that in reality it has much to do with the Gosselin children except as a means of attacking and perpetuating her on-going hatred of Kate and Jon too for that matter.

She has posted on other blogs/discussion groups that: the Gosselin children would be better off without Kate, in another instance without Jon. She appears to think they would be better off without any parents.

She has said other things that are worse (yes I have time stamped screen shots of her posts.) In referring to Kate, she's stated she's seen "the same kind of crazy look on Kate's face, seeing it on her own mother's face."

This person does not appear to have a rational outlook on life.

  88. Good morning Schmecky~ I agree with you that his fundraiser is about as mad shady as ge is.. First it goes to the scoccer team, then it goes to some mystery memorial fund that will give some sort of donation to the team? Im telling you Jon is pocketing that and going off to buy new luggage. He mad at us for not throwing him his own fundraiser!

As far as the book sales, I honestly don't think they were that low and I do not bieve any of it. I think to much false info is already out there and people are picking it up. 89. Linda,

What am I, your lackey??? LMAO!!! Kidding! I'm interested to know too.

    I found this on Bookscan:

Source: Nielsen BookScan. Data does not include sales from Wal-Mart / Sam’s Club or libraries.

    I also found this

    BookScan monitors sales from chain
    bookshops, internet book sites, discount
    outlets and independent bookshops in
the leading English language markets, the
USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa,
UK and Ireland – we now also monitor
sales in Italy, Spain and Denmark. In all
cases BookScan monitors sales to the
    end-user, the consumer.

We collect critical data from each
purchase made at thousands of locations
in the key markets using data collected
at the point of sale from every outlet.
At regular intervals, this information is
    downloaded to BookScan’s production
    system and the information development
    process begins.

Since every book sale made within each
reporting store is collected, the data is
very accurate and fully representative of
both high selling and low selling titles.
By aggregating the data by publisher,
author, genre, format, category or price,
for example, detailed market analysis can
be performed. This allows both publishers
and bookstores to assess their market
share both at the market level and within
    defined categories.

  92. If you make a dollar or two a book as the author of a moderately successful title, selling a few thousand books isn't going to change your financial life. If you make five or ten dollars a book as a publisher, you might earn a living with a few average books, or get rich with a few hundred. Years ago, before print on demand publishing added its contribution to the explosion of new titles, I worked out from various sources that the average trade published book sold 2,000 copies. If anything, I suspect that number may have gone down. Bookscan data gives acquisitions editors a quick and painless (or brainless) way to estimate the market size for a particular title. As a self publisher, if you don't go through a similar exercise using whatever data you can, you're just kidding yourself about being in the publishing business.

Another fun number that I can't credit because I haven't a clue where I first saw it, is that Barnes & Noble and Borders turn over their inventory around twice a year. Just imagine, of the 100,000 plus titles in your local superstore, a large proportion won't even sell one copy before getting returned to the publisher, another big chunk will sell at such a slow rate across the chain that they get dropped within a few months, and of the remaining books, the average title will sit on the shelf for six months. Barnes & Noble and Borders have around 1300 superstores between them that represent the majority of the retail bookstore trade, so two copies per store a year only gets you to 2,600 books for a success! If we intentionally overestimate and say that the two chains only represent half of the bookstore market and that a given book is actually stocked everywhere else (which isn't possible due to bookstore size limitations), it would give us just over the magic 5,000 number.

  93. I also found this but I don't know if it's still accurate since it was written in 2005. It also seems to be just one man's opinion on his blog:

Numbers for Book Sales and Nielsen Bookscan

I've written a lot about publishing industry numbers and how to estimate title sales using Amazon sales ranks. The one program I've never had direct access to is Nielsen Bookscan, due to the price. I have seen Nielsen reports thanks to low friends in high places, but I've never systematically used Nielsen Bookscan for research as practically everybody else with an interest in publishing numbers does. Nielsen aggregates results from the biggest North American book retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Borders, but they lack data from the mass merchandisers like Walmart and supermarkets. Bookscan results are usually given as representing about two thirds of the industry (65% to 70%), but this obviously varies by title. For bestsellers that are widely stocked in mass merchandisers, you'd expect them to be way off, but for books that are sold almost exclusively through Amazon and the chains, which represent a huge part of the trade, they should be pretty spot on.

In an Op-Ed published in the New York Times last week, Tim O'Reilly pointed out that according to Nielsen Bookscan "only 2 percent of the 1.2 million unique titles sold in 2004 had sales of more than 5,000 copies." That amounts to 24,000 titles selling more than 5,000 copies a year. To put that into context, Amazon lists over 24,000 titles published by just one giant trade, McGraw-Hill, in the last five years. Obviously, some of those books are out of print and most of the rest aren't selling over 5,000 copies a year, but it should give you an idea about the relative smallness of the pie. According to Nielsen, they log sales of over 300,000 individual titles in a typical week, but by the time you get to the end of the year, only 1,200,000 unique titles have been sold. Those 900,000 additional titles that have to get smeared out over 52 weeks can't be averaging more than a few sales a year.

    to be continued...

    ReplyDelete
  94. My unprofessional opinion is that Bookscan is pretty accurate. I think it's as accurate as the Nielsen ratings for tv. ????

    Part 5

Book Ranks, Book Sales, Book Statistics...What the heck does all this mean?

If I am a responsible journalist, who really wanted detail, I’d compare a book’s rank across all of these major lists: NY Times, USA Today, and perhaps Nielsen (but note the inconsistencies above.) I would not use NovelScan (and I’ve listed the reasons above. The method’s stated are incongruous with what I was taught about statistics.)

If I wanted to slant an article, I’d choose wherever it was listed lower, listed not at all, or if I were really into Junk Journalism, I’d site a “source” close to the Gosselins, etc. etc. as saying it was “such and such.” Anonymity is just that. Take it with a colossal grain of salt.

If you really want to know, then compare and check the sources cited. If it doesn’t list what you are checking, a book for example, enter another book title that you believe might have done poorly or well and see how the two compare.

I have long defended First Amendment Rights. I believe that you, as a citizen in the United States, have the right to your own admiration, feelings, ideology. I’m even willing to be tolerant of “haters” until they cross certain lines. But, I challenge everybody to at least know where they are building their decisions and from what sources. Don’t just blindly believe anything because it is in “print” or reported, or "so and so" on a blog knows it to be true. Know what you are reporting. Know where you are getting your information.

I also believe that freedom goes hand in hand with responsibility.

I'm reminded about the story about the five men blind from birth trying to describe what an elephant was based on what part of the animal they were touching. One described it as a rope because he had hold of the tail, another, at a leg, described it like a tree trunk, and still another, like a snake because he was feeling the moving trunk. You get the picture.

Book Ranks: It helps to know what you are tracking and to read the fine print.
Multiple posts coming; if you aren’t interested, scroll on by...
    Part 1:

Let’s compare five books (one by Mary Higgins Clark, one by Harlan Coben, one by David Baldacci, one by Kate Gosselin, and one by Carol Burnett. Three adult fiction and two adult non-fiction.

First let’s take NOVEL RANK’s listings
    source: Novel Rank http://www.novelrank.com
Mary Higgins Clark (Just Take My Heart: A Novel) does NOT appear at all on Novel Rank.

Harlan Coben (Caught) appears on Novel Rank in only KINDLE sales. It states he sold only 380 books in April. (This is only KINDLE sales and it states that!)

David Baldacci (Deliver Us From Evil) does NOT appear at all on Novel Rank.

Kate Gosselin (I Just Want You to Know) appears on Novel Rank in only KINDLE sales. It reports three sales figures from Amazon.com (Amazon.com; Amazon.co.uk; and Amazon.ca) but above that it states these are only Amazon’s KINDLE sales, not hardcover, etc.!

Even this website states that Book sales estimates are still estimates...In the end, it is all based on sales rank changes rather than sales numbers.

Novel Rank is done by a “volunteer” (Mario Lurig, creator) who asks you to contribute (states his hourly wage is $0.84/hr)

Also see under his Recent Blog Posts: An Apology. He thinks he’s corrected his errors.
Additionally on the posts, you will note that he thinks he has mathematically figured out a formula for adjusting NYTimes Lists, USA Today Lists, and Amazon and getting a composite figure. I think he is sincere in wanting to do it. I may be completely wrong, but I was taught in Statistics 101, 314, and 402, that to adjust figures you HAVE to know where and how original figures were derived. (Does he have inside info from NY Times, USA Today, Amazon, etc.? How does he adjust for overlaps? )
He cites stats on books and you have to look at the tiny print to even distinguish whether it was Kindle sales only, hardcover sales, only, etc. When you compare across lines, I feel it would be more responsible to state in BIG letters: Kindle only, UK sales only, Amazon sales only, etc. And in the case of Amazon, check what they list. Does it match the data.

    Let’s Take Nielsen books: http://en-us.nielsen.com/rankings/insights/rankings/books
Nielsen books sorts by Fiction – Adult, Fiction – Child, Non-Fiction – Adult, and Non-Fiction – Child. It also groups hardcover, trade paperbacks, and mass market paperbacks together and then there is a separate list for each. (Takes a little more digging on their site.)
Right under each list, is noted that “Nielsen’s BookScan data does NOT (emphasis mine) include sales from WalMart, Sam’s Club or libraries.” I’ve looked, and cannot find if their data includes online sales (Amazon) or wholesale sales. Earlier I had noted that Nielson did not include online but I cannot find the specific reference at the moment.

Mary Higgins Clark (Just Take My Heart: A Novel) does NOT appear in Nielsen’s Top 10 Book Sales – Adult Fiction , but it DOES appear as #5 (Mass Market PAPERBACK sales, no hardback, no online sales, no KINDLE sales, etc.)

Harlan Coben (Caught) does NOT appear at all on Nielsen’s Top 10 Book Sales – Adult Fiction list

David Baldacci (Deliver Us From Evil) is #1 on Nielsen’s Top 10 Book Sales – Adult Fiction list

Kate Gosselin (I Just Want You to Know) does not appear at all on the Nielsen’s Top 10 Book Sales – Adult Non Fiction list.

Carol Burnett (This Time Together) does appear on the Nielsen’s Top 10 Book Sales – Adult Non Fiction list (in Hardcover version).

Let’s Take USA Today Best-Selling Books Database: http://content.usatoday.com/life/books/booksdatabase/default.aspx
USA Today states they use sales from 3,000 bookstores and do NOT include online sales (Amazon, Barnes &Noble), Box Store sales (Walmart, Target); they do use sales figures from select chain store locations and select independent bookstores.

USA Today groups together ALL book sales in that their list includes: Fiction and Non-Fiction, Adult and Child. Additionally they group hardcover, paperback, mass-market paperback, etc.

    The five books:
Mary Higgins Clark (Just Take My Heart: A Novel) is #10 on the USA Today List (Entered the Top 150: 4/16/2009)

Harlan Coben (Caught) is # 16 on the USA Today List. (Entered the Top 150: 4/1/2010)

David Baldacci (Deliver Us From Evil) is #3 on the USA Today List (Entered the Top 150: 4/29/2010.)

Kate Gosselin (I Just Want You to Know) peaked at #103 and not currently in the Top 150. (Entered the Top 150:4/22/2010.) It is reporting one week of figures because of the release date of the book.

Carol Burnett (This Time Together) is #54 with a peak position of #39. It first entered the top 150: 4/15/2010, and has been on the Top 150 list for 3 weeks.

I would not use NovelScan (and I’ve listed the reasons above.

Don’t just blindly believe anything because it is in “print” or reported. Know what you are reporting.

  122. I loved that article, thanks Schmeckygirl. I am going out on a limb here, but wondering if maybe TLC and Tony are discussing him being in an episode of Kate Plus Eight. Maybe he could teach the kids. Also, I am sure that TLC has been closely involved with Kates' DWTS experience and the kind of guy Tony is and maybe they want to do something around dance on TLC which I think would be a nice change. I don't think it has to do with his relationship with Kate. I seriously doubt it is a situation of tlc telling Tony that if he says nice things about Kate, they will give him a gig or even him thinking that if he's nice to her he might get one.

  124. Linda,

Conspiracy? LOL! No, I just meant that if Tony POSSIBLY has something in the works with TLC (just odd he is having a meeting with them) I feel there is no way he would say anything negative about Kate and that it would be in his best interest to say nice things about her if he is going to have some kind of relationship with TLC.

I don't think TLC TOLD Tony to say nice things or that he thought IF he said nice things he could get something from them.

But I do think that IF Tony has something in the works with TLC he would be smart enough to not say anything negative about Kate. If he's really smart then saying extra nice things about her couldn't hurt either.

Just speculating. They could have met with Tony because they all want to learn how to do the Rumba.

  126. The Novel Rank clearly states that Kate's book is the "Hardcover" version where as one of your examples says Harlan Cohen says Kindle Version. Novel Rank clearly states these are all estimates, however the Novel Rank is still a useful tool. From a Statistics point of view all the lists would have a certain amount of error in them, USA Today, NY Times, Amazon unless they checked EVERY book store, and sold to EVERY demographic. Just like any political poll. There is error in any model however if it accurately models the book sales, it can be deemed statistically accurate. The fact remains it ranked currently at 372 on the Amazon list. The NY Times list is based on weekly reports and can be easily just be depicting the pre sales figures from fans like everyone on here, who want it right away and NY Times is assuming that it sales at this rate for the coming weeks. Unless everyone plans on buying second and third copies?

Its fine to say the book did not sell well, there is no need to try and discredit various book sales figures which state it is not doing well.

  127. My mom and I are going to a graduation in Maryland in the beginning of June and want to tie a little vacation into it. We were thinking of going to Valley Forge Pennsylvania because when we went to Philidelphia we had such a great time and never even got to see that. We won't be traveling with kids, has anyone been there?
The Gosselins live so near to such a history rich area, I hope as the kids get older they really get to see it.

  128. Didn't Kate mention once in one interview on DWTS, that it would be nice to have the kids dance with Tony. It was when she was talking about practicing in the basement and then they turn off the cameras and dance with the kids. I think she was letting the cat out of the bag back then. JMO! It will probably be one of the first episodes on Kate + 8. I bet ya!

  129. that would be really cute if they danced with Tony!

I read the article that had Tony's comments on it and I thought it was great.

BTW if any one noticed I switched accounts that I am posting at here because I realized I was posting with the account attached to my personal blog and I figured it probably wasn't a good idea.

  130. We've talked a lot here about Disney. I need different info.

Has anybody here been to one of the Great Wolf Lodge resorts? Williamsburg, or Poconos, or Ohio?
